With no new apprentices enlisted to learn the highly specialized jobs of making cloth lace, and changes in both the market and the way lace is made, Mr. DeCarli, who is now 73, realized that the end was near.

About the year 1890, a Frenchman invented a machine similar in {22}principle to the knitting machine, which reproduces with absolute fidelity the work of the bobbins in making pillow laces. Through this invention he was able to imitate such hand-made laces as Torchons, Medicis, etc., so exactly that experts could not detect the difference. In fact, it is the general testimony of men associated with laces for years, that the work of this machine in a great many of its aspects is one of the most important contributions of the mechanical arts in the production of lace.

The skill soon spread beyond
Dublin to the poorest parts of the country, and proved a popular means for young
women to help support their families. Lace-making required little equipment beyond
bobbins and fine cotton or linen thread, and a great deal of patience, so was suitable
for remote parts of the country that had little industry and few employment options.

Design & StyleLearn About Lace:
From wedding veils to lingerie, lace is a favorite decorative fabric that boasts countless designs that can spruce up any look. The beautiful material can be made from a variety of fibers using many different methods, but all lace is known for its intricate, open designs.
We've had a lot of views on this silly video we created to show the expansion properties of the material.  We continue to refine a line of unisex underwear.
These “skin and bones” structures can incorporate conductive filaments within the pattern to provide comprehensive monitoring within the interconnected structure.  Fluid monitoring would provide a perspective of distributive motion by enabling a "vision" of the whole vs. disjointed sensor segments.

Such monitoring has applications in many categories, for example, sports, medical, robotic, aerospace, automotive and construction applications.
